University of Notre Dame , Australia

Welcome to Notre Dame, one of Australia 's most exciting and innovative universities.

The University was founded in 1990 through an Act of the Western Australian Parliament and a Canonical statute from the Archdiocese of Perth, enacted on 2 July, 1991 . Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2001, Notre Dame has rapidly gained a reputation for innovation and excellence in higher education.

The University ethos draws on the centuries old tradition of Catholic higher education combined with challenging and relevant courses. This ensures graduates are highly sought after by employers for their academic qualifications, skills and contribution to the community.

At Notre Dame, students are able to combine a first class education with involvement in local community service and international activities, a philosophy which ensures students are well equipped to take their place in society.

Notre Dame aims to remain a small, private university committed to ensure that students receive a personalised, high quality education. It offers a caring and friendly learning environment dedicated to providing courses that are challenging, relevant and responsive to student, employer and community needs.

Inspired by one of the greatest Catholic universities in the world, the University of Notre Dame in the United States , Notre Dame Australia brings to Australian education the vibrant traditions of a Catholic university together with the rich history of one of the world's premier universities.

The University is located in the beautiful and historic port city of Fremantle , making learning a profoundly satisfying cultural and educational experience.

Strolling through arcades and streets bustling with markets, coffee shops and restaurants and within reach of some of the best beaches and sporting facilities in Australia , it is easy to see why the University's founders chose such a magnificent location for the beautiful campus.

The mission of Notre Dame University is "The advancement of learning, knowledge and the professions, and the provision of university education within a context of Catholic faith and values".

Notre Dame is an institution that aims to bring this academic tradition to all of its community. This tradition derives from Notre Dame's standing as a University within the great heritage of Catholic universities, a tradition which seeks to bring the substance and values of the Catholic faith into open and creative engagement with the deeper questions of individual and societal life. In this way, the University forms graduates of outstanding quality, personal spirituality and public spirit who are able to take their place in public life. Notre Dame graduates seek to make a significant contribution to the human, economic, social and spiritual development of Australia and its region.

As a foundation to studies, all undergraduates are required to complete three core units - Ethics, Philosophy and Theology. These units introduce students to the great Liberal Arts tradition of the study of ideas and thinking. This encourages an appreciation of the concept of "learning" and provides a broad analytical skills base. The core curriculum should aid students in their search for identity in the midst of a rapidly changing world and lead them to value the best of the cultural legacy and institutions they have inherited. It is the forum where essential Christian values are most clearly presented in open, critical and creative engagement with all other points of view concerning the great questions of individual and social life.

The unique character of the University of Notre Dame is reflected in the commitment to ethics as part of the Core Curriculum. Students are challenged to consider the values and qualities of ethical leadership, to debate with other students and staff the challenges of developing and maintaining standards of ethical behaviour, and to develop a broad range of insights into the practical application of ethical principles in their chosen field of employment.

UNIVERSITY CORE UNITS
Here at Notre Dame we emphasize the value of the human person and the importance of maintaining an ethical way of life. All students complete units in ethics, philosophy and theology dealing with issues that go to the very heart of participation in public life. We also ask students to complete a unit in communication, a foundation unit that introduces you to the skills necessary for successful university study.

Approximately 10% of students at the University come from overseas. Students are drawn from a wide variety of countries including South-East and North Asia , Africa , Europe , South America and the USA .

The University values a culturally diverse campus and welcomes students from many faiths and cultural backgrounds who seek the distinctive education that Notre Dame offers.
