University Name
La Trobe University is named after Charles Joseph La Trobe.
Charles La Trobe was the first Superintendent of the Port Phillip District from 1839 to 1850 and first Lieutenant-Governor of the new colony of Victoria from 1851 to 1854. He supervised the establishment of self-government, the public library, art gallery, a university, and the development of the gold fields.

Governor La Trobe is also famed for ensuring that a minimum of 20% of all land in Melbourne and its surrounding suburbs contain parkland. This old legislation has helped Melbourne to remain one of the great cities of the world.

Establishment of La Trobe University
La Trobe University was officially opened on 8 March 1967 by the Premier of Victoria. It began teaching during the first term of that year.

La Trobe was the third university established in Victoria. It has grown to accommodate more than 15,000 students at its Bundoora campus and over 7,000 at campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Beechworth, Bendigo, Mildura, Mount Buller Melbourne City and Shepparton.

La Trobe consists of five Faculties, each offering a broad range of study options. Our programs are diverse and many are known nationally for their quality, both in instruction and research.

Health Sciences
The Faculty of Health Sciences is one of Australia's leading providers of health science education and comprises eight schools, three research centres, one clinical centre, and one professional development centre.

Science, Technology & Engineering
The Faculty of Science, Technology & Engineering has a number of major research programs underpinning the comprehensive range of courses at both undergraduate (single and double degree programs) and postgraduate (research and coursework degrees) levels.

Regional Development
The Faculty for Regional Development is the new (2002) name for the Bendigo Faculty. This is a multidisciplinary Faculty incorporating a comprehensive range of academic programs, some of which are specific to the Bendigo Campus where the Faculty is largely based. The Faculty for Regional Development has a student population of over 4000 and offers a wide range of courses and study options across five campuses of the University.
