
EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY
INSTITUTION DESCRIPTION
Edith Cowan University was established on 1 January 1991 . Its origin dates
back to 1902, when the first tertiary institution in Western Australia was
established as a training college for teachers. This former college site
is now the Claremont campus of the University.
The University is one of the largest multi-campus universities in Australia
offering courses from undergraduate to doctoral levels together with
continuing education and training programmes. Teaching is provided full-time,
part-time and through open education using advanced multi-media facilities.
The University courses are offered throughout Western Australia , Australia
and overseas.
The University comprises three faculties situated over four metropolitan campuses,
at Churchlands, Claremont , Joondalup and Mount Lawley , and a regional campus
at Bunbury aproximately 150 kilometres south of Perth .
Over 200 courses are offered, including areas such as Accountancy, Arts
Management, Aviation Science, Computer Science/Information Technology,
Education, Electronic Commerce, Engineering - Communication Systems/Computer
Systems/Electronic Systems/Software, Finance, Health Sciences, Hospitality & Tourism
Management, Interactive Multimedia Technologies, Language Studies, Media
Studies/Mass Communications, Nursing, Visual & Performing Arts. Many
courses have a mid-year intake.
SPECIAL SERVICES
The University provides many services for students including health
centres, academic skills counselling, personal counselling, religious counselling
and accommodation services.
Each campus has excellent library and study areas, computer facilities,
recreational amenities including cafeterias, full media services and
a wide range of specialist support services for staff and students.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation can be arranged temporarily when students first
arrive in Perth . This may be in a flat, a home, at university or an
inexpensive hotel. Long term accommodation can also be arranged. Placement
Fee $110.
The University has residential accommodation for 169 students on Mount Lawley
campus and for 146 students on Joondalup campus, including facilities for a
student with disabilities. The accommodation consists of self-contained units.
Accommodation is also available at the Bunbury campus.
MAJOR AREAS OF STUDY
The University comprises of five faculties: Community Services, Education and
Social Sciences; Communications, Health and Science; Business and Public
Administration; the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts; and Bunbury
Faculty.
STUDY ABROAD
Edith Cowan University has all the advantages of a large University
with the atmosphere and friendliness of a smaller college. The University
is located on five unique campuses.
The University welcomes Study Abroad students to study for one or two semesters,
choosing from a wide range of courses in areas such as: Arts, Business, Communications,
Education, Health and Human Sciences, Science, Technology and Engineering and
some courses from the Academy of Performing Arts . A minimum GPA of 2.5 is
required for entry and intakes are in Semester 1 (February) and Semester II
(July).
